Obedience or Propriety

Recently I've been wondering about one's doing something which one may consider to be adab towards the murshid when the murshid may have expressed a dislike for it.

It may even be the case that he mentioned that he'd rather it not be done. I hesitate to ask Sidna such questions so I decided to ask another of the awliya.

With characteristic North African poise he responded thus:

The Sufis say:

التمثيل قبل الادب

that obedience takes precedence over propriety. Even if something is considered adab towards him the wish of the shaykh is followed in preference to it.

Allah bless his Qawm and grant us every faculty through them.

Sidi Qays,

Would this be in reference to standing for the Shaykh, kissing his hand, etc.?

Yes Sidi. Anything that is considered adab.
