Three Types of Murid

Shaykh Ashraf gave another gem of a class today after the Hadra. He continued his remarks on taslim or submission to the murshid.

Among the points he mentioned was that there are three types of murid when it comes to inward and outward submission to the Sheikh:

  1. the murid who when told by the sheikh to throw down a wall rises to execute the command and obeys without hesitation or reservation
  2. the murid who rises to execute the command but is stopped in his tracks time and time again by the intellect that questions the Sheikh's competence, judgment, or motives regarding the command
  3. the murid who sits near the Sheikh, perhaps while looking down on the others who obey and does not rise but instead concludes that the Sheikh meant other than what he ordered and that since the point behind the order was submission and he has already submitted there is no need to actually execute the order

The first one is the Shadhili: his submission is pure and meant to take him to Allah, Most High. The second one submits only outwardly while inwardly rejecting the command and therefore fails to attain benefit. The third is an enemy of the Sheikh, looking down on those who surround the Sheikh while thoroughly deceived by his intellect.

He mentioned that these three types must be present in any Tariq so that the murid may be aware of them and choose by his actions and state one as his own.

Allah reward Sheikh Ashraf and return Sidna to us well and soon. The accordance is but from Allah, the Mighty, the Wise.
